Antiviral drugs are a class of medication used specifically for treating viral infections. They tend to be narrow in spectrum and have limited efficacy. Unlike many antibacterials, antivirals do not destroy their target pathogen. Instead, they inhibit their development.
Particular agents have shown to be carcinogenic and mutagenic in animal testing and impair fertility when administered in humans (ganciclovir) or in animal experiments (cidofovir). Despite the lack of a formal guideline for the preparation of these drugs, manufacturers recommend that handling and disposal be done following the recommendations for antineoplastic agents.
Workplace best practices that can minimize potentially harmful exposure include, use of engineering controls, closed system transfer devices, needleless systems, and personal protective equipment.
