Sedatives, induction agents, anticholinergics, opioid analgesics, anti-emetics, corticosteroids, anti-epileptics, anti-arrhythmics, inotropic agents, diuretics, muscle relaxants, neuroleptics, and drugs used in cardiac arrest are examples of drug classes used as emergency medicine.
Medication procurement and preparation in the emergency department (ED) present challenges that differ from other areas of the hospital. A satellite pharmacy with compounding ability may best serve the needs of an ED by timely preparation of medications. While a sterile room for preparation of intravenous medications may not be a possibility for most EDs, a laminar flow hood would aid in the preparation of most intravenous medication requests.
